CITY MANAGER’S UPDATE

FREE SWIMMING LESSONS FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN OFFERED AT CYPRESS AQUATIC CENTER

Water safety is a vital skill for all children, but it is especially important for children with autism. Drowning is the most common cause of death in autistic children, and Florida leads the nation in child drownings. To help change those alarming statistics, the City of Daytona Beach is offering free water safety lessons for autistic children ages four and older at Cypress Aquatic Center, March 17-21, from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Parents are required to join their children, creating a bonding experience to foster confidence and security. This unique opportunity helps children become more comfortable in aquatic settings and provides families with valuable tools to reinforce water safety beyond the lessons.

Taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and head lifeguard Sharifa Collins, these specialized lessons provide a safe and structured environment where children can develop water safety skills at their own pace. Instruction will focus on building comfort in the water and teaching essential skills like floating, treading water and safely entering and exiting the pool. The free lessons are funded by a $20,000 grant from the County of Volusia’s Swim Safety Grant. Let’s work together to create a safer, more inclusive community where every child can enjoy the water with confidence!
