DAYTONA BEACH GYMNASTICS WINS SEVERAL MEDALS

GRANT FUNDING SECURED FOR CYPRESS PARK UPGRADES The city has received grant funding to enhance the Midtown Recreation Complex with new playground and fitness equipment. Planned to be installed at the south end of Cypress Park, the new fitness equipment includes a decline bench, leg lift, flex wheel and more. The $375,028 grant, awarded by the Racing & Recreational Facilities District, will support improvements that promote active lifestyles and a family-friendly environment at 981 George W. Engram Blvd. T-BALL AND BASEBALL CLINICS UNDERWAY The city’s T-Ball League at Derbyshire Sports Complex is offering free clinics and no league fee for kids ages 4-6 for the first 40 kids. Clinics are from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Boys and girls ages 7-12 can sign up for the Youth Baseball League. Free clinics are being offered weekly at Derbyshire Sports Complex from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. This program aims to develop skills with a low fee of $40 for the season. Daytona Beach Gymnastics recently showcased their talent at the AAU 2nd Qualifier held at Legacy Park in Alachua. Competing with a team of 19 athletes across Xcel Bronze, Xcel Silver, Levels 2 and 3, Xcel Gold and Xcel Platinum, DBG delivered an outstanding performance. The team brought home an impressive 43 medals across vault, bars, beam, floor and all-around events, securing top three finishes. Additionally, DBG gymnasts achieved 38 scores of 9.0 or higher.

NEW PROGRAM ADDED AT SUNNYLAND RECREATION CENTER

Chair Fitness, a low-impact workout that’s easy on the joints, has started at Sunnyland Recreation Center every Monday from 6 to 6:45 p.m. This joint-friendly exercise class is perfect for all fitness levels. Bring your own water and towel and get moving for just $2 per class. Sunnyland Recreation Center is at 825 Washington St.

DERBYSHIRE SPORTS COMPLEX PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS

Construction of Derbyshire Sports Complex’s new paved parking lot is wrapping up. Asphalt and striping are finished for the 105 parking spots. Next, crews will add parking blocks to the handicapped spaces and landscaping will be installed to finish the project. The new parking lot will be used for Derbyshire’s football, softball and Little League fields. DEBATE CLUB IS BACK Students of the Junior Debate Club met for the first time this month at Turie T. Small Elementary School. Students will strengthen their communication and debate skills throughout the program and will host a final debate in May. The Junior Debate Club is part of the Mayor’s Literacy Initiative.

YOUTH BASEBALL NIGHT OUT Youth baseball players enjoyed a night out at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark and cheered on the BCU Baseball team during their SWAC home-opening game Friday night. Before the game started, athletes met the players and pro prospects from ASU and BCU. On Saturday, the youth baseball players participated in the Minority Baseball Prospects free clinic.

MIDTOWN MUSIC CONCERT SERIES Get in the groove at the Midtown Music Concert Series with The Groov Smooth Jazz, starting at 7 p.m. at Daisy Stocking Park. Attendees can enjoy line dancing with Eddra at 6:30 p.m. Don’t miss out on this free concert in the heart of Daytona Beach.
