SUMMER CAMP ACTIVITIES MAKES STOP AT PINE HAVEN APARTMENTS City staff brought the excitement of summer camp directly to local neighborhoods with the kickoff of Summer Fun on the Run. The first stop took place this week at Pine Haven Apartments. Families came out and enjoyed an afternoon filled with music, games, food, drinks and a variety of fun activities for all ages. FOURTH OF JULY PARADE COMES TO MAIN STREET

Make your way to Main Street for the annual Fourth of July Veterans Ceremony and Parade on Thursday, July 4 with events honoring our nation’s heroes. The event begins at 9 a.m. with a Veterans Ceremony at the historic Clock Tower located at 100 N. Atlantic Ave. Following the ceremony, the Independence Day Parade will kick off at 10 a.m., starting from the east end of Main Street and continuing west to the base of the Main Street Bridge. This year’s event is presented by Zone 4 City Commissioner Stacy Cantu in collaboration with community partners. Residents and visitors are encouraged to come out, show their patriotism, and enjoy this special Daytona Beach tradition.

The next stop for Summer Fun on the Run is the Dickerson Recreation Complex, 308 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., June 25 from noon to 4 p.m.

NEW DAYTONA BEACH GYMNASTICS Daytona Beach Gymnastics is offering two summer sessions for youth athletes interested in gymnastics. Session A will run from July 14 to Aug. 15. Session B will take place from Aug. 18 to Oct. 3. Classes are available for youth of all ages and skill levels. The Twinkling Stars program is designed for independent preschoolers ages 3 and up, as well as parent and child participants. These classes focus on basic skills in a fun and supportive environment. Beginner and advanced classes are available for boys and girls ages 5 to 12. Evening Stars classes are offered for girls ages 5 and older. All sessions will be held at Schnebly Recreation Center, 1101 N. Atlantic Ave. Families are encouraged to register early, as space is limited. FREE TENNIS LESSONS OFFERED THIS SUMMER Derbyshire Community Tennis Inc. is offering free tennis lessons for youth ages 6 to 18 from June 17 to July 27 at the Derbyshire Sports Complex, 849 Derbyshire Road. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Registration closes June 24. Participants should wear tennis attire, bring a water bottle and arrive ready to learn with a positive attitude. The program covers essential tennis skills including forehand, backhand, serving, volleying and match play. FREE PICKLEBALL NOW OFFERED AT DICKERSON COMMUNITY CENTER Residents of all ages are invited to enjoy free indoor pickleball at the Dickerson Community Center, located at 308 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Sessions are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:15 to 3:15 p.m., providing a fun and active way to stay fit, socialize and learn the game. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, all skill levels are welcome. Equipment is provided, or participants may bring their own paddles. No registration is required. Just show up ready to play. NEW SWIM LESSONS OFFERED THIS MONTH A new tots swim program for four and five-year-olds will be offered weekly starting this month at the Cypress Aquatic Center, 981 George W. Engram Blvd. Ongoing swim lessons, Baby & Me program and a swim league will continue throughout the month. The cost is $30 per person; however, scholarships are available for qualified youth. EARLY LEARNING COALITION COMES TO SUMMER CAMP Last week, the Learning Mobile from the Early Learning Coalition made a stop at the YSG Cultural & Educational Center for summer camp attendees. The purpose of the Learning Mobile is to provide learning opportunities by reading a book in an engaging way for a small group up to 10 kids, then have an activity that goes along with the book. Participants can take home books as well. The Early Learning Coalition strives to make sure students are reading at grade level throughout the summer. The next stop will be at the Cherry Cultural & Educational Center, 925 George W. Engram Blvd. Friday, June 20 from 1 to 3 p.m.

DESIGN FOR DAISY STOCKING PARK WINS AWARD Castle Bay Design Studio of St. Augustine received the 2024 Award for Outstanding Development Design Excellence from the Florida Planning & Zoning Association for its redesign of Daisy Stocking Park. Unveiled April 2024, the redesigned four-acre park at 555 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd. features a gateway entrance with custom art, new pavilions, upgraded play areas, enhanced lighting and improved walkways. Funded in part by a $1 million African-American Cultural & Historical Grant and $330,000 from the Daytona Beach Racing & Recreational Facilities District, the revitalized park has become a vibrant gathering space for community events in the Midtown area.

CELEBRATE COMMUNITY AT BETHUNE POINT PARK ON JULY 12 Make your way to Bethune Point Park on Saturday, July 12, for Discover Bethune Point Park: A Community Celebration on the Halifax River, a free event for all ages from noon to 3 p.m. Hosted by Zone 1 City Commissioner Monica Paris, this summer gathering invites residents and families to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon outdoors. Guests can enjoy free hot dogs, cool off on an inflatable water slide and take part in engaging activities in a safe and welcoming environment. Sponsored by Zone 1 Commissioner Monica Paris and supported by Daytona Beach Fire Department Local 1162.

BRUCE MCNORTON FOOTBALL CAMP Plays were made at this year’s Bruce McNorton Football Camp at Derbyshire Sports Complex! Attendees had the opportunity to learn the basics and fundamentals of football from several former NFL players, including Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson. The free clinic featured several stations that worked on a variety of skills and building confidence for both boys and girls.

CAMPERS RECEIVE FREE LITERACY KITS The Early Learning Coalition partnered with the city’s summer camp program this year to donate over 300 literacy kits, 100 each for K-1, second grade and third grade campers! These kits include fun, engaging tools to boost reading skills and helpful tips for parents to support literacy at home. This partnership is intended to help set our youth up for success.

SUMMER SPLASH POOL PARTY Youth kicked off summer 2025 with the Summer Splash Pool Party at Campbell Aquatic Center! Youth enjoyed a water slide, free food and drinks, dancing and cooling off at the two pools the aquatic center has to offer. Summer Splash was sponsored by Zone 3 City Commissioner Quanita May and hosted in collaboration with the Daytona Beach Fire Department Local 1162. Additionally, the Campbell Aquatic Center, 400 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. has reopened to the public from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Visitors can enjoy the pool’s amenities, which feature two pools, an ADA ramp to enter the pool, shaded areas, and bathrooms. Admission is just $1.
