CITY OF DAYTONA BEACH FIRE DEPARTMENT

For more than 125 years, the Daytona Beach Fire Department has protected the lives and property of residents and visitors through a steadfast commitment to service, innovation and excellence. Since its founding in 1898, the department has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of one of Florida's most recognized coastal communities while honoring the legacy of those who built its foundation. What began as a volunteer fire department using the city's Light Plant whistle to alert firefighters has grown into a nationally recognized, full-service public safety agency. Throughout its history, the department has embraced innovation, modernized its operations and established programs that have become models throughout the region and across the country. The department's history is marked by significant milestones, including the purchase of its first chemical fire engine in 1902, the hiring of its first paid fire chief in 1909 and the addition of its first motorized fire apparatus in 1913.

As the community grew, so did the department's capabilities with the installation of a fire alarm bell tower in 1919 and the addition of its first aerial ladder truck in 1950. Daytona Beach has long been a leader in the fire service. The department was home to Florida's first State Fire College in 1930 and pioneered several regional and national initiatives, including becoming Volusia County's first Basic Life Support provider in 1974 and first Advanced Life Support provider in 1978. It also introduced the nation's first Motor Medic Program in 1991, launched Volusia County's first Community Paramedicine Program and Drug Abuse Response Team in 2020, and established its Drone Aviation Unit in 2022 to support emergency response, search operations and disaster assessment. Today, the Daytona Beach Fire Department continues to lead through innovation, professional development and a commitment to national best practices. Guided by a proud tradition of service, the department remains focused on protecting the community while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow.
